The Way to Growth

There was a doe and two fawns visiting in my yard recently. They have been coming around about every two days or so. As I was watching the baby deer I began comparing them to human life. I’ve read that the first 7 years are very informative in the growth of a child. They learn to eat, and they learn fine motor skills. They crawl, and then learn to walk. They are very observant of their surroundings and they rely heavily on their parents (or guardians) to take care of them and teach them

How much different is this than the life of a new born Christian? We learn to eat milk (the Word of God), we seek mentors and leaders to teach us, we learn to walk and follow the path God has for us, we are aware of believers vs. non-believers, and we rely on God to take care of us.

1 Corinthians 3:1-2 says: And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able.

Here Paul is talking to the young Christians trying to teach them about the authority that Christ has over their lives. Throughout 1 Corinthians you will see Paul delivering letters that are basic in nature because anything other than the basics would have been over their heads and they would not be able to receive it or understand it.

A number of years ago my husband and I were in a Sunday School class where the subject was apologetics. After 2 years of sitting in a classroom on this subject we finally acknowledged this was above our heads and we sought to find another class that would teach us the basics.

This was the next step in our Spiritual Growth as individuals and as a couple.

Hebrews 5:11-14 says: For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

My husband and I were born again as teenagers. But, we did not follow through in discipleship. We both went to church, including Sunday School and prayer meetings. But, we were church goers. We had not developed a personal day-to-day relationship with God.

I’ll speak for myself. I was involved in everything that was music related. And, I went to everything that was offered. I even opened my Bible from time to time when I got home. But, I lacked the studying and praying, which is where a Christian really blossoms
.
And just as Hebrews 5:11-14 says, I was never going to be more than an infant Christian if all I consumed was milk.

Proverbs 1:5 says: A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.
It was during those years of being in a Sunday School class where the subject matter was over my head that I began to have a strong desire to really get to know God on a personal level.

We landed in a Sunday School Class, and only by the grace of God, the class was called “Growing in the Knowledge of God”. And, it is truly that.

2 Peter 3:18 says: but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

I met a young girl after one of our concerts, on this years’ mission trip to Wales. I was drawn to her during the concert as I watched her struggling through outward emotions. I encouraged her to find a church to join and begin studying the Bible. I warned her that Satan would start attacking her and would use people and things to try to keep her from growing.

A few nights later I met this young girl’s mother. Out of a few hundred people attending this concert a lady came up to me and thanked me for our performance and she began telling me about her daughter. She shared some of her struggles with me. She said she had all but given up hope for her. And that all she could do now was pray for her.

I pray I’ll hear more of their story next year, but I may never know. This young girl’s name is Danielle. Would someone call out Danielle’s name to the Lord and ask Him to give her strength and courage as she begins her walk as a baby Christian.

Now, I ask each of you to search your heart. Where are you in your walk with Christ? Are you still barely surviving on milk? If so, it’s time for you to start studying the Word and begin to take on the meat that God has for you.
